Frequently asked questions

Everything you might be wondering

Common questions about chiropractic care.

How does Chiropractic work?

The joints between bones can become "restricted" or "misaligned", which can be responsible for causing pressure or irritation to nerves leading to tingling, numbness or pain — but could be so subtle that it causes no symptoms at all. These are called subluxations.

Chiropractors are specifically trained to detect and correct these. Although it takes years to develop the sensitive touch (palpation), you are likely to recognise them if they are pointed out to you.

How effective is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic has been scientifically scrutinised for many decades and the clinical results also speak for themselves. The UK Medical Research Council has found that patients with low back pain who received chiropractic treatment experienced a greater reduction in disability compared to those who attended hospital outpatients departments. Additionally, the benefits of chiropractic care were also found to be longer lasting. Research has mainly focussed on back, neck and sciatic pain as well as Migraine to mention but a few.

The study recommended that chiropractic treatment be made available through the NHS in Britain, however that has as of yet not happened. In the United Kingdom, many private insurance companies cover part or all of the cost of chiropractic treatment.

What does the research say about chiropractic?

The strongest evidence for chiropractic care concerns low back pain, neck pain and sciatica.

Randomised trials have found spinal manipulation more effective than simulated treatment for acute back pain and sciatica with disc protrusion, and have found benefit for chronic low back pain that is better sustained when care is maintained rather than stopped after an initial course.

On safety, a large population-based study found no evidence of excess risk of acute lumbar disc herniation among patients who had seen a chiropractor, compared with those who had seen a GP.

The evidence is not uniform and individual results vary — we’re always happy to talk through what it means for your particular case. The studies below are listed with their PubMed reference numbers so you can read them in full.

What happens during treatment, and will it hurt?

Treatment involves precise adjustments of specific joints performed by your skilled chiropractor. These adjustments are typically painless, although some techniques may produce a "click" or "pop" sound from the joint — which can be a novel experience for the patient, but is still pain-free.

The goal of treatment is to restore normal joint function, thereby alleviating irritation to the nervous system. Ultimately, the aim is not only to relieve the symptoms but also to restore and maintain optimal health and well-being.

Do I need a GP referral?

Because chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners, you do not require a referral from a GP to consult at BritChiro. Many GPs refer patients to our clinic, as they have come into contact with people whom we have helped. Unfortunately, chiropractic treatment is generally not yet available under the NHS. Most health insurance providers cover all or part of the cost of treatment.

What happens if I'm told chiropractic isn't likely to help me?

At BritChiro, there are instances where individuals come in for their first visit or examination and, instead of receiving chiropractic treatment, are referred to an appropriate specialist or General Practitioner (GP). In some cases, we may offer to write a short report to assist them in receiving the right care elsewhere.

Our patients often express gratitude for this service, as our chiropractors can help guide them through the often confusing NHS system. Based on our experience, these referral reports usually facilitate access to the appropriate care within the NHS.

Your initial chiropractic consultation at BritChiro New Milton will be a thorough and unique health assessment. This evaluation is significant for your overall health, similar to conventional medical examinations, but it focuses on different aspects. For example, we once diagnosed an elderly patient with an old, severe neck fracture, which unfortunately meant we could not provide her with treatment. However, after years without a proper diagnosis from the NHS, she was relieved to finally understand her condition — and went on to recommend many of her friends to our clinic.
