Understanding your headaches

Find the cause first

There are many types of headache, and it’s not unusual for someone to experience more than one type. Common headaches include:

  • Tension headaches, often associated with muscle tension, stress, poor posture, anxiety or prolonged desk work.
  • Cervicogenic headaches, where pain originates from the joints or muscles of the neck — often manifesting as reduced or painful head turning.
  • Migraine, which may cause severe head pain alongside symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, dizziness, and visual disturbances.
  • Headaches related to sinus problems, dehydration, eye strain or other medical conditions — or following a fall or car accident.

Because headaches can have many different causes, an accurate assessment is necessary before any treatment begins.

Chiropractor explaining findings to a patient at BritChiro New Milton Accurate assessment first

How chiropractic may help

At BritChiro New Milton, our chiropractors carry out a thorough assessment to determine how your headaches may be related to the muscle tension, joints, or nerves of your neck or upper back. For people whose headaches are related to neck problems or muscle tension, chiropractic care may help improve movement, reduce muscle tightness, and ease associated discomfort.

Chiropractic care for migraines

Migraines are a complex neurological condition with many potential triggers. While chiropractic is not a treatment for migraine itself, some people whose migraines are associated with neck restriction or muscle tension may find that improving neck function and reducing muscular tension helps reduce the frequency or intensity of their symptoms.

A personalised approach

Our goal is not simply to relieve your current symptoms, but also to help you understand the factors contributing to your headaches. By addressing movement, posture, muscle tension, and lifestyle factors, we aim to help you manage your condition and reduce the likelihood of recurring episodes where appropriate.

If you are looking for a chiropractor in New Milton for headaches, neck pain, tension headaches, or migraine-related neck discomfort, our experienced chiropractors are here to provide a comprehensive assessment and personalised chiropractic care tailored to your needs.

“After my very first treatment, I was able to turn my head from left to right for the first time ever!… I haven’t had a headache since. I wouldn’t normally be able to go more than 3 days without one.”

Headache FAQs

Questions people ask about headaches

If you’re wondering about anything else, just give us a call — we’re happy to help.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners, so you can book directly with us — many GPs actually refer their patients to our clinic. Most private health insurance providers cover all or part of the cost of treatment. Please check your individual policy.

Can chiropractic cure my migraines?

We’ll be honest: migraines are a complex neurological condition, and chiropractic is not a treatment for migraine itself. However, some people whose migraines are associated with neck restriction or muscle tension find that improving neck function helps reduce the frequency or intensity of their symptoms. A thorough assessment will tell us whether that’s likely to apply to you.

Will treatment hurt?

Treatment involves precise adjustments of specific joints, and these are typically painless. Some techniques produce a “click” or “pop” sound from the joint — a novel experience the first time, but still pain-free. Your chiropractor will explain everything before starting.

What if chiropractic isn’t right for my headaches?

We’ll tell you straight. If your examination suggests you’d be better cared for elsewhere, we’ll explain why, refer you to your GP or an appropriate specialist, and — where helpful — write a short report to guide you to the right care.

Patients travel to us from Highcliffe, Lymington and Milford-on-Sea for headache and migraine care — and from right across the New Forest:
